Abstract
In this work, the use of a rate-adaptive transmission scheme based on silence periods and treated as runlengthlimited (RLL) sequence is proposed in order to mitigate the adverse effect of atmospheric turbulence in optical free space communications. Results show that the bit error rate obtained by the proposed scheme is similar to that of the Viterbi algorithm with a much lower computational load.
